A cold february evening with a few flags. How it all started.

The No10Vigil

The Number 10 Vigil was started in February 2017 as a regular evening protest against Brexit three times a week at Richmond Terrace on Whitehall, opposite Downing street. As it grew it expanded to include performances and one-off events on specific occasions (such as the triggering of article 50 or the general Election). It also acted as a focal point on Whitehall at the end of the big Remain marches, with a small stage where various performers and speakers appeared. As well as the regular Whitehall demos the Number 10 vigil also went 'on tour' on many occasions. This involved leafletting at London stations before big events/demos, visiting the main party conferences, demonstrations and marches in other cities, summer festivals and in one case Berlin! There were also stunts to 'flag bomb' TV broadcasts such as the One Show and Channel 4 news, and on a bigger scale the last night of the Proms at the Albert Hall. As the focus of central London Remain protesting shifted to Sodem outside parliament, many Vigil regulars were also involved with this, while still doing one-off protests, the last main one at Richmond Terrace being in June 2019 on the week of the 3rd anniversary of the referendum.
